Writers, you may have heard of a cinquo or a nonet, but are you willing to try writing a dodoitsu? An etheree, tyburn, rahutunt, or rictameter?

Linda Varsell Smith, creator of Fooling Around With Words Workshops, will lead a Writers-on-Writing workshop at the Willamette Writers Coast Branch monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 4, at the Newport Public Library from 7 to 8:30 pm. Her topic is "Poems That Count: Syllabic Poetry for All Occasions." This lighthearted workshop, which is free and open to all ages, is useful for classroom teachers as well.

Smith teaches creative writing, children's literature and life story at Linn-Benton Community College. For ten years her Literary Publication class produced the community arts journal, The Eloquent Umbrella. A Calyx Books editor since 1982, she was also president of the Oregon State Poetry Association for ten years. She is member of Willamette Writers, PEN Women Portland Branch, currently co-chair of the Willamette Literary Guild, and a coordinator of the William Stafford Celebration in Corvallis.

As Poetry Superintendent, she coordinated the Youth Poetry Contest and Adult Poetry Exhibit at the Benton County Fair for 25 years. Now she works with ArtCentric on a fall youth poetry contest. Linda started LBCC's Writers on Writing lecture series, worked on the Family Poetry Project, teaches workshops and judges contests.

She is a member of Poetic License, a women's poetry performance and critique group. She has published over 100 poems and twelve fantasy novels for children. With her husband she was nominated for 2003 Patron of the Arts Award in Corvallis and they sponsor the Kip Smith Writing Award for high school seniors.

Willamette Writers monthly meetings are held each first Tuesday in the McEntee Room at the Newport Public Library from 7-8:30 p.m. Admission is free. On May 2 Jessica Morrell will talk on Fiction: "Connecting the Dots."
